NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) in work and the natural environment: Identification, exposure assessment, and the decision making process

Who is organizing?
Course organized by: Central Mining Institute (GIG) – Silesian Centre for Environmental Radioactivity. The training course focuses on most aspects related to NORM. As there is still a general lack of knowledge in this matter is observed, the course program covers basic information about NORM, including the identification of cases of concern (by industry type as well as by technological processes applied), the inconclusiveness of existing regulation, and the interaction of NORM with other pollutants frequently present simultaneously. Key processes controlling the behaviour of naturally occurring radionuclides in different ecosystems will be outlined, including basic concepts, variables/parameters and kinetics needed for modeling purposes. The main part of the course is devoted to measurements of occupational exposure and environmental radiation impact associated with enhanced natural radioactivity released from NORM-generating industries. Sampling strategies and protocols will be presented, and training will include the use of state-of-the-art measurement techniques (laboratory and in situ). Exercises on calculation of radiation doses to workers and members of the public, as well as the use of Environmental Risk Assessment models ERICA tool)), are included. The course will culminate with simulations of decision making processes based on examples drawn from the field.
Application.
The target group consists of PhD students and continuing professional education interested in developing their capabilities and skills related to the direct measurement and assessment of NORM’s impact on work and the natural environment, as well as gathering basic knowledge necessary to manage, maintain and control technological processes connected with NORM.
According to extensive laboratory and field exercises, the number of participants is limited to 12.

The programme.
The Framework program can be slightly changed according to the final composition of the attendees group.
An educational trip to a local coal mine, Guido, will be held for interested parties. The trip is free of charge and will take place on one of the weekend days. For more information about Guido, please visit kopalniaguido.pl
Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to visit the Wieliczka salt mine, and afterwards spend some time in the historical district of Krakow. For participants of the Training Course, we offer complementary accommodations in the Hotel Katowice Economy (** 2 stars standard http://hotel-katowice.com.pl/en/), which is walking distance from the headquarters of the Central Mining Institute, where lectures and laboratory classes will take place. The complementary accommodations for Participants are double rooms (the same gender). The Hotel double rooms come with the following equipment: comfortable bed, desk, satellite TV, free WIFI, and hairdryer. The price includes breakfast buffet served from 6:30 to 10:00.

Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport is the nearest airport in the vicinity of the Central Mining Institute – participants are obliged to cover the costs of their own flights. However, we will gladly pick up participants from the airport and take them to their accommodations. This can be organized upon approval of the application and the confirmation of flight details. Public transport in Katowice is well organised; there are trams, buses and trains. This will allow participants to get around on their own in their free time. All details will be provided in welcoming emails.
